I guess I accidentially posted to both lists.
I'll answer only here where I think it belongs.

I had seen the discussion on the list about this bug. However, if I don't
remember wrong their problem was that the  ^ (or similar characters)
doesn't show up at all, by my does/did. So I did not understand it was the
same bug.
I updated my qt into qt-3.3.4-0.fc3.0  (using yum install) but after that
I could not write hats at all, just like I remembered from the maillists.
Right now I am compiling the latest version from trolltech hoping that
will solve the problem.
If that does not work I guess I should go for 
ftp://apt.kde-redhat.org/apt/kde-redhat/fedora/3/stable/RPMS/qt-3.3.3-16.3.3.kde.i386.rpm
like is proposed on lyx bugzilla.
