thank you for your example (\renewenvironment{eqnarray}).
But what I don't understand (and would like to learn) is the behaviour
of the default:
which parameter is controling (under fleqn), that the vertical space
above the eqnarray is significatly greater than the vertical space below ??

But as far as I can see, LyX supports eqnarray, but doesn't support the
ams split environment.
