Could be, Angus. I've used .eps files in my book with no problems. In this case I'm explicitly using the PDF viewer, not pdflatex. Just tried the latter and it's still no go, but the image is larger and easier to read.

  Well, I'll go spelunking in the beamer manual again and see if I can
stumble across insight there. If so, I'll post the answer so that future
archeologists who dig in the archives can find a complete thread.
