The fonts are installed in some kind of 'descriptive' form initially.
To view dvi you need a bitmap form. Computing this from the
'descriptive' form may take quite some time (up to a few seconds per
font size/shape/etc combination). As this process is quite expensive,
the results will be cached, so the conversion is done only once
(well, depending on your system's settings the cache might get cleared
after a few weeks or months, but that's ususally bearable)
