It is supposed to do that, and it does so in almost all cases. There are
several reports of failing conversions. Maybe you are seeing the same
problem as in this report http://bugzilla.lyx.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2235 ?
Please file a new bug report with a minimal example file if your problem
is something else and if it is reproducible.

I don't understand your reply. pdflatex doesn't process .eps
according to documentation.

What part of LyX automatically changes all .eps images into
.png or .jpeg or .pdf so that when you have a lyx document
which contains .eps images open, you can then click on
View ->pdflatex and this will work because LyX by default has
previously converted those .eps files into jpeg, png, or pdf, so
that such images are available for generating the pdf file by pdflatex?

Pauls report:
"View --> PDF (pdflatex) I do not get the picture on the PDF document."

My experience is that I can generate the a viewable .pdf file using dvipdfm
but not pdflatex. http://bugzilla.lyx.org/show_bug.cgi?id=2299
