This works for Citation style set to "Default (numerical)", however the 
citations are in author-year.  When the  Citation style changed to 
Natbib:numerical to get citations ordered in ascending numerical order,  errors 
occur at citations and Lyx will not complete compiling the ps or pdf: 

the error dialogue box has  has: Extra /else 

this is after inserting in preamble:

/usepackage{hyperref}

Document  Settings: bibliography style to Natbib:numerical
Bibtex bibliography has style set to plainnat

This occurs if citations are as Article, Book, TechReport, or URL
