Next, the Win1.4.x installer is still beta and there is a list
of potential problems at http://wiki.lyx.org/Windows/LyX14x
so it is prudent/competent to install the LyX1.3.7 version.

It's not beta! LyXWIninstaller is now very stable: I have several thousand downloads of it and got only three valid bug reports that are fixed in the actual version. LyX 1.4.x foe windows has some problems. The only one you can blame Angus or me is that the localized menus don't work. The rest are normal LyX bugs. The J:\ drive problem is a boost bug.

Bo remarked that he wished he had your installer instead of the
Angus "official" installer that he used. I call your installer
the Uwe installer or LyXWinInstaller. I provide an url above
that should have prevented any misunderstanding. I am going to
quote from that url which distinguishes the 1.4.x installer
which I describe as beta from the WinLyXInstaller whose
improvement is clear from the context.

"*(This problem doesn't occur with LyXWinInstaller.)<-------
If 1.4.1 won't start in XP, and you got errors related to lyxrc.defaults while you were installing, you may need an environment variable MSYS didn't install. Go to Control Panel->System->Advanced->Environment Variables->User variables for Owner and edit the "path" variable, i.e. add C:\msys\1.0\bin or wherever you told the MSYS installer to put that directory. Then open a command prompt, navigate to i.e. C:\Program Files\LyX141\Resources. At the prompt, type "sh configure". After a goodly wait, during which the script will return the results of what programs it found, you should be able to start LyX from the desktop shortcut (you may have to reroute that shortcut to C:\Program Files\LyX141\bin\lyx.bat, or to lyx1.4.x.exe in the same directory, as noted elsewhere in the wiki.)"

"*(This problem doesn't occur with LyXWinInstaller.) <------------
Due to a bug (or confluence of bugs) in the configuration process, LyX/Win 1.4.1 may not recognize the presence of tex2lyx, the program that allows you to import LaTeX files as LyX documents. If File->Import does not show the LaTeX option, open a command windows in the LyX bin directory verify that (a) you have tex2lyx1.4.x.exe there and (b) you do not have tex2lyx.exe there. Either rename tex2lyx1.4.x.exe to tex2lyx.exe or copy it and name the copy tex2lyx.exe. Now reconfigure and restart LyX. The LaTeX import option should be there."

SH: This webpage is primarily about the Angus installer
ftp://ftp.lyx.org/pub/lyx/bin/1.4.1/lyx-1.4.1_win32_setup_v1.exe
with comments added to point out improvements of the WinLyXInstaller.

I think that without the improvements mentioned
"*(This problem doesn't occur with LyXWinInstaller.) [twice]
the non-LyXWinInstaller is at beta level.

Nor was I comparing the two 1.4 installer versions. I was
comparing the Angus installer, indicated by webpage link
to the 1.3.7 installer.

SH: "Hence you (Bo)wouldn't be reporting your frustration if you
had chosen to use 1.3.7 (either version) which is also best for
a new user, because is has fewer bugs so that the new user is
not in a position to have to decide if it is his user error or
a future fix for 1.4.x." [doesn't mean 1.4.x installer only]

That excerpt refers to both the installer and the Lyx program.
The last release of Angus' 1.3.7, he fixed the "sh configure"
problem and provided Aspell6. So either 1.3.7 version provides
a nearly flawless installer in comparison to non-WinLyXInstaller
1.4.1 which has at least two more flaws than WinLyXInstaller.

I was not critical of either installer lest you read that into
my post (1.4x). I expect new releases to be less polished than
older established releases. I already explained my reasons for
thinking 1.3.7 is the best first choice for a new user which
were not just the performance of the installer.

Stephen
