thanks for that, Lyx couldn't find latex so maybe this is the problem.
running Lyx in Linux: Ubuntu/Breezy
Currently upgrading synaptic sources to Ubuntu/Dapper and Debian/Sarge-Etch, 
this may do the trick.

any other suggestions?
