 Jean-Marc, 
thanks for your pointer. However, if I use your proposal 
Xanthium|emph
the Index does not show the word emphasized, but normal (and alphabetically 
correct). 
So far I used
\emph{Xanthium} in the index box in the text
which gave me the emphasized appearance but at the begin of the index.
I will check the manual, but if it is just a minor point I would appreciate 
your help.
