I've reinstalled Imagemagick and reconfigured Lyx, and I still can't get inline images. Any other ideas?

        Thanks.

nicely, but they don't display in the screen version.

This looks like a problem with the installation of the program "Imagemagick" that is used by LyX to convert images to a format that Lyx can display.

What's the overall most successful way to create images for both printing and display?

Have a llok at section 1.3 and appendix B in the Extended-Insets manual:
http://wiki.lyx.org/LyX/DocumentationDevelopment#Extended-Insets
where the image and output formats are described.
