It sounds like I can use these modules the way a circuit designer uses chips, in order to build the exact capabilities I need for the document. As soon as I get 1.6 I'm going to try it out.
Yes, exactly. That's the idea. You mix and match, and don't have to create a new layout every time you change something. Even better: You can edit modules and see the effects without re-starting LyX. Just do Document>Settings, change something, and hit OK. More or less. I'm going to do something about the re-starting issue more generally, too.
