But if you use the Description environment, you don't get automatic
numbering and it must be hard to cross-ref your definitions?

What about putting in the preamble

        \newtheorem{definition}{Definition}

then you can open any definition with

        \begin{definition}

and close it with

        \end{definition}

(both in ERT). This kind of item is basically part of the "theorem-like
statements" and unless I'm missing something, there's nothing yet to set up
these theorems purely within the LyX interface. Am I wrong? (I'd like to!)
