It's a feature, not a bug! Nonetheless, you can turn it off: LyX >
Preferences > Look and Feel > Open documents in tabs.

Is there a way to have the best of both worlds - to be able to "dock"
a window and have it show up as a tab - without having to have it
either all tabbed or all separate???
