/"When all else fails, read the manual"--/ So I did, and found how to prevent Lyx from centering numbered equations: use the fleqn option in the Document Class under Settings.This left-justifies the equations, which is not really what I wanted, but it prevents the breaking up of the equation that bothered me before.
