Steve,

I suggest you try the powerdot class.  I've used it for about five years with 
great satisfaction.  A few years ago there were problems getting it to run 
with TeTex, but with TeXlive the new standard it seems to run straight out of 
the box.

The only thing you really need to remember is it does not work with pdflatex.

I've received quite a few compliments on my presentations from people who have 
never seen anything but Powerpoint (though admittedly that's a pretty low 
standard to exceed).
