Hi Mark, Lyx.app is what you use when you launch Lyx from your Applications menu. It lives where you have installed Lyx (normally /Applications ). When you go to this folder using finder, you will just see Lyx, but it is in fact a folder called Lyx.app. You can normally right-click on it and choose to explore its contents. Then you will see that it contains several folders, and one of them is Templates.
Normally Lyx creates a lyx folder in your personal Library folder, in the Application support subfolder. This folder contains your personal configurations for Lyx. I am translating this from French, and telling by memory since I cannot access to my Mac at this moment, so please do not hesitate to look around the locations that I indicate, you should easily find these folders.
