Good point. But unfortunately there are only one or two Mac developers around here, and I'm not even sure they have the hardware to test the retina display. This asymmetry between many users and only a couple of developers makes me wonder if this situation is good for a sponsorship. If everyone donated a little, maybe it would make it more worthwhile to the developer (or at least show the developer that some people care and are happy to help contribute).
