it has been almost always like that lzip pre-releases are always
available as .lz only.

if your distribution doesn't provide lzip already, you can install the
last stable lzip release first (always available as both gzip and lzip
compressed tarballs).

Antonio, i think it would be good to have all lzip (and related)
tarballs as both gzip and lzip compressed, regardless if they are stable
or pre-releases. seems simpler and more consistent. what do you think?
