Hi Mike,
    I tried to replace the NiCd battery leaving the unit without battery for 
few days and when I applied the new one I left it on charge without turning on 
the unit for couple of days. 
I think this should have cleared the garbage in the RAM :)
I also replaced most of the electrolitic capacitors and the voltage levels are 
fine. 
I managed to test also the LCD and it works correctly.
