So, in this case, the "serial cable" is really just that stack of adapters, with no actual cable. I don't know about anyone else, but I was assuming that there was a serial cable somewhere in the chain.

This is ok, and is probably wired correctly enough as far as wiring goes. It's just not ideal physically/mechanically because of having such a long rigid piece hanging off the serial port.

I personally would get either the smaller adapters like Kurt showed, or one of the serial cables I linked to, simply because I hate a stack of adapters like that. That takes the place of all the adapters.

But, it's probably electrically fine, and you can probably just go ahead and keep using that setup if you don't care about the looks or ungainliness.

Voila - here's my setup.

Starting at the 102, there's the DB9/DB25 adapter, then gender changer, then null modem, then usb/serial cable, then my Dell laptop.

    Tom,

You shouldn't need to replace your usb/serial adapter. I know that
there is the odd ball case out there but the VAST majority of
these converters just create a 9pin male serial port that matches
the standard port found on an IBM-AT from the mid 80's.

Here is a thought. Take a picture of your setup and send it. Keep
in mind that emails to the list need to be less than 64k so the
picture will need to be small.

Yep - definitely a neat looking setup!

But if I buy yet another cable - this time one of the null modem
cables recommended on that Tandy wiki page ... don't I still have
to buy a usb/serial converter unit?

As the list members have pointed out, there seems to be a wiring
problem with my current usb/serial unit.  So using my current
usb/serial unit is causing the screen voltage problem.

That is another nice neat arrangement.
        I like it.
