That wouldn’t have made a difference, because it would still have shown up in
an unrelated thread. When you reply, your email client sets the In-Reply-To
header to the Message-ID of whatever you’re replying to -- that’s how it knows
the thread structure. So it would have shown up in the unrelated thread and
been confusing anyway.
Also, seems like a lot more work than just composing a new message.
