I am asking out of complete ignorance, but what is different about this solution vs. a FabGL VGA32 board running the VT100 terminal emulator?

I read the link and I am guessing the custom firmware accepts the DVI commands and perhaps also the custom character set of the Model 100?

This project is basically a minor variant of the original design by Geoff Graham. To program the microcontroller you need a programmer, and you need to install the tools and learn how to program the chip.   I suggest reading about the original project at:
