I'm in the process of updating to a 1.6 milestone build. Do you have any recommendation for what to set the permgen to in the eclipse.ini file?

It is expected to use much much more permgen memory. You can increase permgen memory in eclipse.ini. Having said that, there was a slow memory leak in m2e, which could cause permgen oome on very long running eclipse instances. m2e basically never released maven plugin classloaders, so if you change plugin versions in your projects or use snapshot plugins, eclipse eventually ran out of memory.
