I really don't know, Bill. Why don't you ask someone like Christine 
Stiles? She's the one
who popularized the term. All mailings are performances for mail artists 
who want to adopt
that stance. Rather like what Allan Kaprow called "activities". Mail 
artists often speak of
their "activities" probably not referencing Kaprow directly but still. 
It's all related in my mind
in a poetic sense... but as the Association of Autonomous Astronauts 
always says : you can't take
words into space. heh. RA
