Actually there could be a sign that the phone was attempted to be rooted. Sometimes, things just go wrong in the process and the phone ends up doing nothing and is about as useful as a brick. The term for this happening is actually "bricking". At that point a cell provider will know right away what someone tried to do. Its about as same as dropping the phone in water. There are little water sensitive stickers located in the phone that will change colors if they get wet. I've heard of one phone that the sticker was located inside the headphone jack.
