This is an issue between GMail and IMAP on the Macintosh.  In the mailbox 
behavior area of your mail account preference pane, you can tell Mail to keep 
drafts locally.  I recommend doing this unless you have a specific reason to 
edit your outgoing mails on multiple  mail clients.  Once the message is fully 
sent by GMAIL the extra drafts go into GMAIL's bin folder.
