Thanks for all the help with this. Column navigation in particular is a revelation. With this setting the Mac has become far superior to the Windows file management for me. I am now speeding around copying audio books onto my sister's mp3 players for her.
I phoned another blind Mac user to tell him the good news. He is also thrilled to find this setting.
