Yes, give this a try. On the desktop, press command comma to open the finder preferences. In the tool bar, click the general option if this is not already selected. You will see some check boxes for what drives to show on the desktop. Check the option to show external disks, while you're here, you may want to check the options for hard disks and CDs as well.
