There are alternative mail programs, one I've tried is called gnumail, and while it works just fine, I much prefer the apple interface (at least in tiger, leopard and snow leopard. Haven't tried lion yet, so can't comment on that one. You can locate gnumail if you want to try it out at:

It's initially built for 10.2, but I have used it in both 10.4, and 10.5 (didn't try it in 10.6) but it does come with source, so if it doesn't run on 10.7, it's possible it could be fixed.
