Ok all.
I am in settings, general, software update, and the progress is halted.
But it also says checking for update. What do I need to do now? My
screen is currently unlocked. Of course we are all new to this software
update feature so I am not expecting a response just like that. But if
you can help that would be great. Thanks! P.S. I am on wifi on my iPhone 4.

Hi, if you go to settings and general and software updates this will get you
where you need to be. Now I think you need to be on Wi-Fi for this!

The latest update, IOS 5.01, is now available. In the summary tab, the
dialogue may tell you your softwear is up to date, but press the update
button anyway, and you'll be informed of the new update.
