Hi Sarah,

Yes, that's the method that Paul Hopewell ended up adopting. I think that it
may have the limitation that your system will always use Safari to open the
link, and that if you're using an older operating system (like Tiger and maybe
even Leopard) that file format may not work, whereas another format I have
called ".webloc" files will always work, and will use whatever is designated as
the default browser, even if it isn't Safari.

However, the method outlined in the Mac OS X hint article you linked is
simpler. For example, to create a link to the Mac-Access list archives I could
open TextEdit and type:
[InternetShortcut]
URL=http://www.mail-archive.com/mac-access@mac-access.net/

and then save the file with a name like "mac-access.url", being very careful to
press "return" after the line with the URL so there is a final line feed
character at the end of the file before I save it. Then, I could put this on
my Desktop or in my dock by highlighting the file in Finder and pressing
Command-Shift-T. I actually keep one of these shortcuts in my dock to access
the archive search pages.

I think Travis has also been using this format, and may be able to say how well
this format works with older versions of Mac OS X.

Cheers,

Esther
