Maybe but have they check the connection to the computer and tried a
different USB port? Have they tried using a different wire from the device
to the computer? Have they tried this on another computer? I would do all
this first before uninstalling iTunes then do that.  JST

I've heard of this kind of issue on a tech podcast and the fix was to
re-install iTunes.

When installing you won't have to worry about loosing data.
