Hi Karen and Chris,

I assume that Karen is using QuickTime Player 7 because she wants direct access
to the A/V control window and also to do AppleScripting controls for things
like faster playback listening of podcasts and audiobooks, which you can't do
with the current version of QuickTime since Snow Leopard. Either that, or she
may have purchased QuickTime Pro for the additional authoring options in an
earlier version of Mac OS X.

I've only been using QuickTime Player 7 through AppleScripts/Automator
workflows, but I just checked trying to start the "play" button with VoiceOver,
and there is a bug with using VO-Space. If I route my mouse cursor to the play
button and use VO-Shift-Space to click on "play", then the track will only play
for as long as I continue to hold down the VO+Shift key controls. This seems
to be one of those instances where you need a "hardware click" to work the
controls. If you're set up to turn mouse keys on and off with 5 presses of the
Option key, then just toggling mouse keys on and pressing the "i" key when your
mouse cursor is focused on the "play" button of QuickTime Player 7 will work.
This is my standard work-around for a "hardware click". Alternatively, if
you're using the TrackPad, and have routed your mouse cursor to the "Play"
button, you can simply double tap on the TrackPad to start playing if TrackPad
Commander is off. (Again, somewhat weirdly, I can't naviga
te to the play control with TrackPad Commander on and start playing with a
double tap.) This is in Snow Leopard, by the way. Once the track is playing,
I can toggle on the A/V control window with Command+K and interact with the
slider to control speed.

For those of you wanting to use QuickTime Player 7, here's the Apple Knowledge
Base Article on "Installing QuickTime Player 7 on Mac OS X v.10.6 or Later"
that has a download link for Lion users:
http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3678

Probably obvious that I'm mostly using iTunes to play. You can also use VLC
(which also lets you control play speed). Other people are using Cog.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
