Hi Glenn, What are you trying to do by pairing your laptop and iPhone? I've only done this when using a program like iKeyboard or Type2Phone that lets me use my laptop keyboard like a Bluetooth keyboard for the iPhone.
When I use Bluetooth to pair the iPhone and laptop I don't actually have to type in any PIN numbers. I turn Bluetooth on in the Settings > General > Bluetooth screen of my iPhone. What happens the first time I go to the System Preferences > Bluetooth menu on my laptop to check the boxes so that Bluetooth is turned on and discoverable, after my iPhone shows up as a discovered device and I run the Bluetooth Setup Assistant, is that I'm prompted with a 6 digit code from my laptop's Bluetooth Setup Assistant window, and on my iPhone, under the Settings > General > Bluetooth screen, I get a message "Esther's MacBook Pro would like to pair with your iPhone. Confirm that the PIN code "xxxxxx" is shown on "Esther's MacBook Pro" and there are buttons for "Cancel" and "Pair". All I have to do is double tap the "Pair" button on the screen of my iPhone to apply the PIN code entry on the iPhone that also matches the one that shows up on my laptop. When I pair a Bluetooth keyboard to the iPhone, there's usually a prompt on the iPhone screen to have me type in a four digit PIN on the keyboard and press "Return" to pair the keyboard. The pairing with my laptop is different, since there are six digits to the PIN, but I don't actually have to type anything in -- just double tap the "Pair" button on the message that gives the six digit PIN code. In some instances you may get a message that pairing has failed or timed out even though there is now an entry for "Glenn's MacBook Pro" in the list of devices on the Settings > General > Bluetooth screen for your iPhone. You may try double tapping that entry and see whether your iPhone connects to your laptop. I've read that some desktop Macs actually do require you to type in the six digit PIN to pair to your iPhone in Bluetooth, but for laptops you should just be able to double tap the "Pair" button that appears in the dialog window. HTH.
