Most of the time, if you're compiling a program that is already
ported to the mac, there will be a file in the source folder called
project.xcode.pbproj where project is the name of the program you're
compiling. Simply click on that file, and osx will open Xcode, and
you can then set options, compile, or edit source as desired.
If it's a terminal program, then the typical unix type commands apply
which in most cases is the simple
./configure
make
make install
with the last command being performed as root or sudo root to make
all files go where they should.
You'll of course need to be in terminal for the configure and make
commands to operate properly, but after that's all done, yu should be
in good shape.
