I should have written:
command-option-shift-delete: bypass internal hard drive and boot from
external drive or CD

I got this information from the "Keyboard shortcuts - Mac Guides" at:
http://guides.macrumors.com/Keyboard_shortcuts

Cheers.

Hi Jim

The most reliable way is probably to try and eject your internal drive. If
you can, you're booting from the external drive. The other way might be to
set the external drive as your start disk. Also, I'm confused. You say
you've used the "CTRL+Option+Command+Delete" command. It's been a very long
time since I've bothered booting from external media, and maybe this is
something I've forgotten about. But what does this command do? I seem to
remember just holding down the Option key and selecting from a list.
