This isn't quite what I need.  Labels only work on individual files so that 
isn't a solution.  As for editing the VO dictionary, that didn't work either 
for a couple of reasons.  One is that, as people often seem to forget, we're 
dealing with somebody with vision here not just a blind person.  Two, if there 
are characters immediately proceeding the "full stop" in the file name, it 
doesn't work.  So unfortunately, neither of those two solutions is adequate.  
What we need is some way to have the description of each file type changed.
