Just tried it and I did not find it worked for expanding this message thread. I 
just got an error beep. Turning on voiceover keyboard  help  reported toggle 
expand  disclosure on and off. I think this is slightly different?  It may be 
that I am getting a different result as I have customised     VO verbosity so  
mail would   not  say  disclosure triangle   on messages as this  was driving 
me mad.
