Hello all, The situation:
Mac Mini running 10.6.8; 8 gigs ram and rather proficient Mac user. The computer ran fine until a couple months ago when the user abruptly disconnected the monitor which has not been used since. From that time, the computer has run very sluggishly anytime you activate any finder windows; run applications; or in general, attempt to use the machine. Today, the user backed the system up using Carbon Copy Cloner to an external drive. Upon completion of said backup, the user attempted to boot from the drive to test its bootability. The user discovered that not only did it boot wel, but that it was possible to navigate in finder windows without any kind of delay. Is there anyone who can shed any light on this scenario? At first the user believed it might be the missing monitor, and I mentioned this as a possibility, as I recall there have been some discussions on the necessity (or not) of the connection to a monitor for the mini to run smoothly. Yet, if this were the problem, what would booting from an external rather than the internal have anything to do with monitors (or lack thereof) as to make it usable in a normal way when booted from the external while still unusable when booted from the internal if there were no monitor present during either booting? Any and all suggestions and insights would be much appreciated. Basically, the user is willing to do a clean install if that is truly necessary, but of course would rather it weren't. Someone please advise.
