That's exactly what the recovery tool is for Sarah. It isn't necessary to pre-format the drive as the partition is written block by block when you attempt to write your boot device. Sean, Try the recovery tool and point it to your flash card and see what happens. If the flash card isn't listed in valid install devices, then it isn't going to work.
