Respectfully, I disagree on this point, and I'll tell you why.  If, as 
sometimes happens, updated versions make changes to preference files which 
point to the same application name as the older versions did, but which have 
distinctly updated formatting, replacing the older app won't solve your problem 
necessarily.  In fact, it could actually cause horrendous problems.  This 
comment is based on personal experience.
