Hi Dónal, I don't know whether this app does what you want, but when I was on the macupdate promo site I noticed that they had an extended deal on an app named "Decloner". Here's the description: "Decloner finds and eliminates identical files on your Mac. Accurately identify duplicates every time with the help of the SHA-1 algorithm -- that's the power of Decloner!"
It doesn't say anything about checking through mail messages, though. Here's the direct web page link to the mupromo page: http://www.mupromo.com/deal/13248/decloner There's a 25% discount good for two+ more days ($7.49, reduced from $10). You could download the demo and check whether it's of any use to you. For iTunes duplicates, I'd probably look for something by Doug Adams either from his AppleScript site or the Mac App Store, but I think you wanted a more general duplicate finder/remover. HTH.
