Well, I never thought I'd see this day, but it seems the Barnes & Noble "Nook" App has been made VO accessible with today's release of version 3.3.0.
The "What's New" section of this release includes the following information: New in 3.3: - New language support for British English, French, Italian, German and Spanish. - Now with UK NOOK Books and Magazines support. - Now leveraging Apple assistive technology, including screen magnification and VoiceOver, to be accessible to blind and low vision users. - Now with iPhone 5 support . After installing the upgrade on my iPhone 4S running IOS 6.01, I launched the App and was able to fully access all elements from the initial splash screen to the license agreement to the country selection and login screens. After logging in using my BN account, I was presented with a popup asking me if I wanted to take a tutorial on using the accessibility gestures. I tapped OK and was presented with a very nicely done and thorough text-based tutorial. It appears BN has wisely chosen to follow the standard VO guidelines. There is a continuous reading mode as well as an interactive mode, and standard rotor and item chooser controls seem to be fully supported. I downloaded two books, did a quick read-through on both, and it appears the Developers have been quite thorough about labeling buttons and controls and providing audible feedback when appropriate. I look forward to spending more time with this App and trying it on my iPad when my schedule permits, and I'm interested in hearing from other folks who give it a spin. If this truly does make Barnes & Noble's collection available to VO IOS Users, I think it is a huge step forward.
