Press command comma to open finder preferences, check the option to show the 
hard drive on your desktop. There are a few ways you can restore from a backup, 
you could just copy the files to the appropriate place, alternatively, you 
might give the migration assistant a try, it should be able to transfer your 
files from a backup.
