There's also quicktime that comes with your mac (or at least it used
to, haven't purchased a mac in years, so may no longer be valid)
Quicktime isn't a full featured editor, but if all you want is simple
stuff, it will handle it. The registered version is 40 bucks or so,
but if you don't need anything fancy, it may fit the bill for you. I
don't know how much you can do without registering it, but I think
there's still some basic editing capabilities, not sure, it's been
quite a while since I purchased my copy. I don't need to do that
much editing, so for me, quicktime does the job quite nicely, and
I've never had the need to invest in anything more complicated. But
as I said, I don't need anything great, just stuff to remove sections
of audio, and occasionally record something, and for this, it works
great.
It can do more than that, but I've never had need to use it's other
features, which admittedly are few, but depending on your needs, it
may be enough.

your Mac may already have garage band on it, the way mind did, so
don't purchase it till you see if it is not already in your aps.
