Bryan!

You nailed it. Thank you.
I think what was going on was that somehow, if the deleted messages didn't
reach the server, they went to my IPhone trash folder and not the server
trash folder. I reselected the server trash folder, and that did the trick.
Fantastic! Thank you for your help!
Jim

Subject: Re: IPhone and GMail

Hi Jim, I recently had the second issue you mentioned, the one where the
iPhone would say, "unable to delete message" when I attempted to delete any
emails from my gmail account. My other email accounts including iCloud and
Exchange did not exhibit this issue. Here's what fixed it for me on my AT&T
iPhone 4S running the latest IOS6. This assumes you are using the native
IOS6 mail client, not the gmail app or other mail client. Also, I'm not sure
if this will resolve your issue of the deleted items still showing up on
your computer, but it's worth checking.

1. On your iPhone go to settings / mail contacts calendar.
2. Double-tap the mischievous gmail account to open it.
3. Double-tap the "Account" button to open it.
4. Double-tap the "Advanced" button to open the advanced settings.
5. Select the item labeled "Deleted mailbox." This item should have a
mailbox name associated with it. If it does not, double-tap and you will be
presented with a list of possible mailboxes. On my iPhone this includes the
local iPhone trash folder as well as the full list of server-side mailboxes
for the chosen gmail account.
6. Select the desired mailbox for your deleted items, probably a trash
folder in the list of gmail folders.
7. Scrub back to the Accounts page where you will want to double-tap the
Done button to save your settings.

In my case the mailbox selection for the deleted mailbox had somehow gotten
removed. Adding it back fixed my issue.

HTH,
Bryan
