Hi Andy, The FInder preferences lets you select the items that will appear in the sidebar if you choose to view it. They do not require the side bar to be viewed. Try either using the keyboard shortcut Command+Option+S to toggle the Finder sidebar between show and hide modes, or else navigate to the View menu on the menu bar (Control+F2 or VO+M to move to the menu bar, then press "V" to move to the "View" menu and arrow down), and select the "Show sidebar" menu option."
