The problem Sarah is not so much with LaTeX but with the PDFLaTeX.  I won't go 
into a longwinded explanation, but the way it deals with PDF isn't the most 
accessible.  I've not looked at this, but a very talented academic has and he 
reckons to get it working properly would take millions of (insert currency).
