Hello. in mail go to yrou prefs then accounts in the tool bar, then to add new account. From there just enter you name, your gmail and its password and from there follow the prompts. apple will detect a gmail account and set it up for you so all you need to do is make sure the settings are correct and hit create.
Also sometimes it asks if you want contacts to be set up there to and notes and calendar. I normally say no to that and only set it up for mail. Take care.
