Hi Michael,

If this is an Audible audiobook file with DRM purchased either from Audible or
from the iTunes Store that you want to write out to audio CD, then you won't be
able to use third party programs to split the file. Otherwise, I would
recommend using Amadeus Pro, if you have it, since there's a nice feature for
marking silence points and splitting tracks, or else you could use Fission from
Rogue Amoeba (the makers of Audio Hijack Pro), which will handle editing
without re-encoding. I've used Amadeus Pro before to automatically split
tracks from cassette tape recordings that I've digitized to audio format on my
Mac. By playing around with the time length of the silence for placing
markers, I can do a nice auto-split. I usually clean the tracks of noise
between I try this by using the Amadeus Pro feature of selecting a section of
track without sound (but which might include tape hiss, etc.) and using that to
denoise my file. (I haven't done this in some time, since I converted
most of these tracks a while ago.) In practice, if you don't use automatic
settings, you could set markers at the intervals you want (about 80 minutes, or
maybe less), then review the marker placements by jumping to them and checking
whether these are good break points and interactively adjusting them with your
cursor to move them before splitting the entire track. You should probably get
tips from someone who has been working with this kind of process recently, and
has suggestions.

The way you handle splitting Audible (or other long audio files in iTunes for
copying, converting, or burning to audio CD) is by setting the start and stop
times for the track in the Options tab for that track which you access with the
Command-I "Get Info" shortcut after selecting the track. Then any operations
that you perform -- whether it is simply playback, converting to another audio
format in iTunes, or creating an audio CD from the content -- only takes effect
for the section of the track between the start and stop times.

HTH. Cheers,

Esther
